 COMBINED POWER SURGE AT HENTY

COMBINED POWER SURGE AT HENTY

2/07/2008 10:08:00 AM
CDHBU followed on from its good recent form against the top six teams by finally breaking its losing streak, with a comfortable 56 point win over Henty at Henty.

After winning three of its first four rounds this season, the Power lost its next seven in a row before, turning around its fortunes against the undermanned Swampies.

Paul Lavis with six goals and Luke Bedford with five were unstoppable in attack, while burly midfielder Doug Lavis ran riot with thirty plus possessions in a best a field showing.

The Swampies hung on gamely in the first half, only trailing by 15 points, before the extra muscle and running power of CDHBU propelled them to an impressive win away from home.

Tom Spencer was superb for Henty, while defenders Al Edis and Grant Gardiner turned away many attacks against huge odds. Shaun Thiele in a new role kicked two goals for Henty.

JINDERA TOO GOOD FOR CULCAIRN

Jindera has staked its claim for this years Hume league premiership with a terrific performance at home against defending premiers Culcairn before a large crowd.

The Bulldogs have taken over favoritism for the flag following a withering last quarter finish that blew the Lions off the park, to win by 41 points in a possible grand final preview.

The Bulldogs have gone to the top of the ladder and if they can win away this Saturday against Osborne, they should guarantee themselves a top two finish and the vital double chance.

The match was a tightly contested battle for the first three quarters with Culcairn taking the early ascendancy on the back of some midfield dominance led by Brent Barber and D J Oates.

The Bulldogs gained more possession after the first break and with Joel Mackie dominating Jindera were able to turn in front at half time, leading by three points after a cracking half of football.

Mackie was certainly the architect of the Bulldogs second half dominance and if he can curb his some times wild ways, will play a pivotal role in the Bulldogs attempt to win its first flag in 33 years.

Trent Castles was another player to step up for Jindera, playing in the ruck in the absence of Ben Ryan and Luke Sutters who are still sidelined with injury.

The return from injury of star recruits Nic Holman and James Quamby was significant with both players being amongst the Bulldogs best after long stints out with injury.

Chad Willis played a lone hand up forward for Culcairn kicking five goals, as the normally productive Luke Donan and Andrew Robertson were well held against the tight Jindera defence.

Jindera finished the game in grand style ramming home seven last quarter goals, with Mark Hilton (5) and Bryce Scott (3) goals playing leading roles all day.

The Lions badly missed the class and poise of Assistant Coach Shannon Gilson and Coach Matt Klemke. Further testing their depth was the absence as well of Craig Bosley and the Schulz brothers Ben and Sam.
